Hurricane season typically begins in June and lasts until November. Over the years, August & September have proven to be the most active months for hurricanes in Houston. However, until late fall, it’s better to be prepared than caught off-guard. Hurricanes can do serious damage to your home and put you and your loved ones in danger, but there are several things you can do to make sure your house and your family stay safe. We’ve put together a checklist so that you can be prepared for a hurricane before it hits.

Supplies:

  • Two-week supply of medical supplies and medicines
  • Cash
  • Flashlights
  • Batteries
  • Portable Phone Chargers
  • Battery Powered Radio
  • Nonperishable Food
  • Water for 7 days (enough for every person to have a gallon a day)
  • Non-electric can opener
  • Cooler

Important Documents:

  • Birth Certificates
  • Insurance Cards
  • Social Security Cards
  • Bank/Credit Card Numbers
  • Wills
  • House Inventory Photos
  • Titles (cars, boats, etc.)
  • Vet Records for Pets

Phone List:

  • Doctor’s Office
  • Insurance Company
  • Electric, Gas, Water Companies
  • Family/Friends/Neighbors
  • Landlord or Property Manager
  • Bank or Credit Union
  • Nearest Urgent Care/ER

Emergency Kit:

  • First Aid Kit
  • Pet Supplies
  • Sleeping Bags and Pillows
  • Toolbox/Rope
  • Plastic Tarp and Duct Tape
  • Work Gloves
  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Cleaning Supplies

  • Clothes
  • Special Needs for Infants/Children or Elderly/Disabled

During hurricane season, be sure you have an evacuation plan and a full tank of gas in your car at all times. Plan ahead in case of emergencies and have important phone numbers or addresses written down in the event of power outages or poor cell service. Consider stocking up on supplies over the coming weeks so that you can avoid the rush of “panic-buying” if a storm approaches.
